Our Vision

Our vision is a world where all people attain optimal iodine nutrition and children can reach their full cognitive potential.

Our Mission

Our mission is to be the authoritative voice for iodine nutrition. We support and catalyze global and national iodine programs, working with key public, private, scientific and civic stakeholders. We focus on universal salt iodization as the most cost-effective and sustainable solution for prevention of iodine deficiency disorders.

Laboratory Services

South Asia Regional Office of ICCIDD has a well-equipped laboratory where facilities exist for estimation of iodine in urine and salt. The laboratory works under the leadership of Dr. Chandrakant S. Pandav. This is one of the resource laboratories of IRLI Network. We provide following services:

1 - Estimation of iodine in urine and salt for the following:

  • Academic institutions
  • Research institutions
  • Non–governmental organization (NGO’s)
  • Industry

2 - Implementation of External and Internal Quality Control protocol in the laboratories of academic institutions, research institutions, NGO’s and salt manufacturers.

(A)External Quality assurance (EQA) Protocol

  1. The reference laboratory will analyze six salt samples (different brands) purchased from the market, six times each.
  2. Find the mean and Standard Deviation for each salt samples.
  3. Reference laboratory will send 50 gm. of each salt sample to the field laboratory each month
  4. Field laboratory will analyze these salt samples in duplicate and send the results to reference laboratory.
  5. Reference laboratory then will compile the results, compare the values and advise any remedial measures

(B) Internal Quality assurance

  1.  Preparation of known value samples
  2. Analysis of known value samples with every batch of salt to be tested
  3. Plot LewyJenning plot
  4. Monitoring and Feedback based on results of LJ plot
  5. Fixed number of samples to be collected randomly on different days and analyzed un duplicate
  6. Salt samples along with the results to be sent to the reference laboratory each month (at least 50 gm. for each sample.
  7. The reference laboratory will analyze these salt samples in duplicate and then compare the results with the values obtained by the laboratory which sent the samples.

ICCIDD Technical Team visits the laboratory initially for establishing the internal quality assessment programme and subsequently for in site assessment and advice once a year.

3 Institutional Training of Laboratory personnel (Regional as well as National) - Salt Department, Medical / Home Science or Public Health Institutions and Salt Manufacturers
